Wells Carnival is a not-for-profit organisation run by a team of hardworking volunteers who live in or near the town of Wells-next-the-Sea on the beautiful North Norfolk coast. The event has been taking place annually at the beginning of August for over 50 years. In fact we are reliably informed that the Carnival, but admittedly not as we know it, since it was only one day or weekend, started in the 1890´s. Over the years the event has grown and the carnival committee ‘Crew’ (they wear the fuchsia pink T.shirts) now organise more than 90 events over the 10 days of Carnival.
We endeavour to provide entertainment for all ages from teddy bears picnics for the little ones, costume making workshops, raft race, history walks plus live music over 6 nights and the ever popular Screen on the Green. The event culminates on the 2nd Saturday with the main Carnival event, including fancy dress competitions, a parade around the town and a spectacular music event in the evening.
FLOATS & FANCY DRESS
Wells Carnival Procession is, as always, open to all! We’d be delighted if you’d like to join in and it would be wonderful to see some new faces taking part. If you would like some help with your costume or would like to take part but you’re fresh out of ideas for something to wear, why not come to our Carnival Costume Workshop during Carnival week.
Parade - the parade leaves the Buttlands at 3pm on Carnival Day. All fancy dress participants are welcome to accompany the floats as they travel through the town. However, children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Live Music Events – During the week the committee organise approx 6 evenings of live music at different venues around the town. We endeavour to provide a wide range of music to appeal to people of all ages and tastes and in the past have included a Wild West evening, a Beach Party, Classical Music and various Tribute Groups
Food & Craft Day – held on the Buttlands and is a summer fair packed with stalls offering food from around the world and closer to home, plus crafts and entertainment.
Childrens Fantastic Fun Day – To take place on the Beach Road Playing Field on the Wednesday - organised and run by the Friends of the Beach Road Playing Field
Sandcastle & Sand Sculpture Competition – Taking place on Wells Beach, this event is very much dependant on the tides and is open to all ages.
Teddy Bears Picnic – For the under 6’s – bring a picnic, a teddy or a special toy and a grown-up and follow the trail through the woods to the clearing. Set out your picnic and enjoy the entertainment.
Gillying Competition – Taking place by the Harbour Office, use your skills with a crab line and bait to see how many gillys (crabs) you can catch in a given time.
Carnival Day & Evening – The 2nd Saturday of Carnival week brings Carnival Day itself. The event takes place on the Buttlands and includes stalls, entertainment, fancy dress competitions along with the famous Carnival Parade around the town. There is then live musical entertainment in the evening bringing the day to a close.
Some of the other events throughout the week will include: Bingo, Costume Making Workshop, Craft Fairs, Children’s Painting Competition and Classical Music on the Buttlands.
All the events during Carnival week are either free of charge or of minimal cost to cover expenses. The committee are all volunteers and rely on donations from members of the public to ensure the continuation of the Carnival. We endeavour to repeat old favourites and bring in new and exciting entertainment each year. So please make sure you pop a pound in our collection bucket when you come to an event. If everyone who came to Wells Carnival gave us just £5.00, who knows who we could get to perform next year!!!!!!!
