Description

The Mid Norfolk Railway aims to be a Community Railway, linking the ancient market towns of Wymondham to Dereham, and returning eventually to Fakenham. The MNR runs through 11 miles of attractive rural Norfolk, between Dereham and Wymondham.
About our trains.

MNR has a dual traction policy. Summer weekends use Steam with ex-Great Western Railway styled Pannier Tank No.9466. Midweek or low season journeys frequently use a Heritage Diesel Multiple Unit, from which the beautiful and varied rural countryside and agriculture may be best appreciated. Principally arable farming nestles alongside the copses and brakes of trees, intermingled with pleasant rural view of farmsteads, churches, a sail-less windmill and several traditional level crossings. Farm animals at pasture and wild animals, such as deer, rabbits, and birds such as woodpeckers, owls and other raptors can sometimes be seen. The view through the DMU’s driving compartment’s window is a bonus. The MNR passes through pretty villages and hamlets and also river valleys, which provide tributaries to the infant River Yare.

Dereham Station is a Victorian era building which has been restored to a 1950s appearance, similar to the way it would have looked when Dereham was still an important railway centre. It has a period ticket office, a tearoom, a shop and extensive parking for our visitors. Our Station is a few minutes walk away from the bustling town centre. Dereham is home to our collection of heritage diesel railcars, locomotives, carriages and wagons.

Wymondham Abbey Station is located close to the beautiful twin towered Abbey in Becketswell Road and adjacent to the river Tiffey. Wymondham itself has a number of beautifully preserved historic buildings including the timber framed Market Cross and the Green Dragon inn. The excellent town museum is housed in the Bridewell, a former gaol.

Disabled facilities
All our stations are wheelchair friendly and ramps are available to gain access to the trains. Disabled toilet facilities are available at Dereham Station.
