30th June – 2nd July 2017.
The speed and skill of horses and drivers round the testing Sandringham course makes a fascinating day out.
The Sandringham Carriage Driving Trials will take place from 30th June - 2nd July in the lovely park at Sandringham. It will again be an international competition with entries also expected from France, Germany, Holland and Belgium.
The three-phase competition is based on the ridden Three-Day Event and starts with the Dressage on Friday. The Dressage test, which has to be driven from memory, is a set sequence of movements in an arena measuring 100m x 40m (80 x 40m for Young Drivers). It is an opportunity to see the lovely turnouts at their smartest!
The most exciting part of the competition is the Cross-Country Marathon. The course of approximately 16 km around the Royal estate is divided into three sections of roads and tracks. The final section is the most important with 8 specially designed obstacles which have to be driven at speed.
The final Cones Driving phase is a test of accuracy when competitors have to drive between pairs of cones placed between 20 and 30 centimetres (8 to 12 inches) wider than the track width of the carriages .
The event is a true test of overall horsemanship, and all Britain´s top drivers will no doubt be competing.
