Photography Workshop - Coastal Landscapes

Wednesday 10th May - 9:30am to 4:30pm

Taking a stroll along the Norfolk coast can be an awe-inspiring experience at this time of the year offering a rich diversity of natural subjects to photograph.

This one-day course provides that experience where professional photographer Nigel Downer will guide and show you a range of techniques to photograph the stunning landscape of the Holkham National Nature Reserve from the standard pictorial images to the more abstract and intimate. Through practical demonstration you will be shown how design and composition play a vital role in forming that aesthetically pleasing picture.

The course is suitable to both the beginner and the more experienced in photography. You will need to bring your own camera, but some equipment will be available for your use on the day. Nigel will contact you prior to the event to discuss any other equipment needs. We suggest you wear suitable footwear and warm clothing for walking along the coast.

Outdoor Workshop - Bird Identification

Sunday 14th May - 10am to 12 noon

Do you know how to tell a swallow from a swift or a kestrel from a kite? Whether you are an avid birder or a complete birdwatching beginner, our Bird Identification workshop will give you a step by step, practical learning experience which will enable you to confidently identify a wide range of common and less common UK birds. Our local birding expert will lead you through all the birding basics, from binocular use to song identification and give you key tips on spotting the diagnostic features of birds of all shapes and sizes.

Sketching Workshop - Drawn to ´Field to Fork´

Friday 19th May - 11:30am and 1.30pm

The Field to Fork Experience is the perfect setting for an exciting sketching experience. Join us to discover new ways of seeing the history of food and farming at Holkham in our interactive workshop. All abilities welcome.

Tickets: Included in standard admission. Pre-booking advisable. Duration approximately 45 minutes.

Art Workshop - Paper Mosaicks

Saturday 17th June - 10am to 5pm

Be inspired by the famous walled garden at Holkham with this fun, colourful and intriguing art workshop, which will reference the extraordinary floral paper collages of Mary Delany (1700-1788), a contemporary of Thomas Coke, the builder of Holkham Hall.

Join artist David Allsop who will introduce you to the art drawing with scissors, exploring works by others such as Henri Matisse and Rob Ryan to inspire you to create your own Mary Delany style paper cut, or as Mary would say ‘paper-mosaick’.

The day will also include a sketching session outside in the walled garden, where David will share tips and techniques to help you formulate your finished artwork.

This workshop is suitable for all abilities, from absolute beginners tothose with a bit more experience wishing to explore a different take on a form of art. All materials, a buffet lunch and free car parking are included.

Photography Workshop - Coastal Landscapes

Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th July - 10am to 5pm

This two-day event will set new and exciting challenges allowing you the opportunity to photograph a range of subjects around the estate. Specialist photographic techniques will include traditional landscape, close-up, natural history, flora, architecture and abstract. Professional photographer, Nigel Downer, will give you guidance and help on a one-one basis on how to use your camera to produce pictures that show flair, imagination and aesthetic quality. On the second day, you will be given access to the house interior offering you the opportunity to photograph its breathtaking architecture. During your visit you will be given a number of thematic assignments to choose from which will later be analysed and discussed in a group critique session.

Prior to the event, Nigel will contact you to discuss your equipment needs. However, some equipment will be available during the event should you require it. The course is suitable to both the beginner and the more experienced in photography. We suggest that you wear suitable footwear for walking around the parkland and come prepared for all weathers.

Art Workshop - Wallpaper Art

Sunday 10th September - 10am to 5pm

Be inspired by the wonderful velvet, coffey, damask and tapestries that adorn the walls of Holkham Hall to create your very own section of wallpaper. Join artist David Allsop who will introduce you to designers and artists who have used pattern to create wallpaper, such as William Morris, Andy Warhol and Mark Hearld.

Your day will include a visit to Holkham Hall to see the patterns and designs used in the staterooms and David will share tips and techniques to help you with your design. Using a simple 2 colour printing process, you will then create a piece of wallpaper with a repeat pattern of your final design.

This workshop is suitable for all abilities, from absolute beginners to those with a bit more experience wishing to explore a different take on a form of art. All materials, a buffet lunch and free car parking are included.

Here is a great opportunity to get up close and personal with our herd of Fallow and Red deer. Autumn is the time of the rutting season which offers you the chance to witness and photograph the behaviour of these amazing animals. You will be guided to the best vantage points and professional photographer Nigel Downer, will help you to achieve those once in a lifetime images with the equipment you have.
