Music at Holkham Hall 2017

Enjoy chamber music, classical music and opera at its finest in the perfect setting of the Marble Hall at Holkham.

The programmes for this year are detailed as follows:-

Wednesday 19th April - 7.30pm - 88 Keys Piano Project

Join us in the wonderful setting of the Marble Hall as we host a concert by the Alderman Peel High School to raise funds to replace all of the pianos at the school. This will be a special evening with music by Rachmaninoff performed by various guest pianists.

Friday 28th April - 7pm - Chamber Music Concert - Stephen Hough, piano

Programme of music: Debussy: Clair de Lune (Suite Bergamasque), Debussy: Images Book II, Schumann: Fantasie Op.17, Debussy: La Terrasse des Audiences du Clair de Lune (Préludes Book II), Debussy: Images Book I, Beethoven: Sonata in F minor Op.57 ‘Appassionata’.

Stephen Hough was born in the Wirral in 1961 and was a 1978 finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition. He studied at the Royal Northern College of Music. He is one of the best known pianists of our day travelling the globe each year to play with the world’s leading orchestras and giving solo recitals in the major concert halls.

Stephen Hough’s first concerts in 2017 will be at the Lincoln Center with the New York Philharmonic. Following that, he will play in Indianapolis, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and São Paulo. At home he will perform with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and in Cardiff with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, as well as giving many solo recitals. Stephen Hough has recorded more than fifty CDs. He is also a highly regarded journalist, contributing articles on a wide range of subjects to The Times, The Guardian and BBC Music Magazine. He is Visiting Professor at the Royal Academy of Music, holds the International Chair of Piano Studies at the RNCM and teaches at the Juilliard School in New York.

Friday 12th May - 7pm - Chamber Music Concert - Ailyn Pérez - Soprano, Gary Matthewman - Piano

Programme of music: An evening of songs by de Falla, Turina, Fauré and others, together with a selection of opera arias.

“Her voice has a distinctive timbre with plaintive richness and a youthful bloom.” The New York Times. One of the world’s leading sopranos Ailyn Pérez was born in Chicago of Mexican parents. She studied at the Philadelphia Academy of Vocal Arts and at Indiana University. She won the coveted Richard Tucker Award in 2012, joining an illustrious roster of the greatest American singers who have received this award over the past 40 years, including Renée Fleming, Joyce DiDonato, Ruth Ann Swenson, Deborah Voigt and Eric Cutler. She won the 2016 Beverly Sills Artist Award from the Metropolitan Opera and many other important prizes. She made her début at the Metropolitan Opera in 2015 as Micaëla in Carmen, returning this season as Mimi in La bohème.

Ailyn comes to Norfolk between singing Violetta in La traviata at the Staatsoper unter den Linden, Berlin and the Teatro alla Scala, Milan. Other highlights include Juliette at the Salzburg Festival and at the Santa Fe Opera, Desdemona at the Houston Grand Opera and Fiordiligi at the Netherlands Opera. At the Royal Opera House Covent Garden she has appeared in La traviata, where The Observer described her as “the ideal Violetta” and as Liu in Turandot. At the Glyndebourne Festival she sang Alice Ford in Falstaff.

Ailyn Perez and Gary Matthewman gave their first recital together in the summer of 2016.

Friday 28th July - 7pm - Diva Opera - La bohème

Written by Puccini and set in 1830s Paris, La bohème is one of opera’s most popular and unforgettable stories. When young poet Rodolfo meets seamstress Mimi, it’s love at first sight. But faced by the cruel realities of poverty and ill health, will the flame that burns between them flicker and die? Or will the timeless strength of their youthful passion withstand every trial and tribulation that life can throw at them?

Tickets: £80, includes a Champagne reception on arrival. This event is black tie with an interval of one hour for picnics. If weather is inclement, alternative arrangements will be made.

Saturday 29th July - 7pm - Diva Opera - La Cenerentola

As Cinderella serves her cruel stepfather and ugly stepsisters, she dreams of escaping her life of drudgery. Although mistreated by her family, she is gentle and kind and her goodness warms the hearts of all she meets, including a handsome prince who is in search of a bride.
Rossini’s comic opera overflows with joyous music as it retells the famous fairy tale. This delightful romantic comedy appeals to audiences of all ages and proves that dreams really do come true.

Friday 15th September - 7pm - Chamber Music Concert - Carducci Quartet, Simon Rowland-Jones - Viola

Programme of music: Haydn: String Quartet in B flat Op.76 No.4 ‘Sunrise’, Shostakovich: String Quartet in D Op.83, Dvorák: String Quintet in E flat Op.97.

Described by The Strad as presenting “a masterclass in unanimity of musical purpose, in which severity could melt seamlessly into charm and drama into geniality”, the Carducci Quartet is recognised as one of today’s most successful string quartets. Performing over ninety concerts worldwide each year, the quartet also run their own recording label Carducci Classics; an annual festival in Highnam, Gloucester and, in September 2014, directed their first Carducci Festival in Castagneto Carducci: the town from which they took their name.

Winners of several international competitions, the Anglo-Irish quartet regularly appears at prestigious venues across the globe including the Wigmore Hall, London and Carnegie Hall, New York. The Carducci Quartet was recently given the Royal Philharmonic Award for chamber music and song, for their Shostakovich 15 project, in which they presented the composer’s complete catalogue of works for quartet at several different international venues, sometimes all fifteen quartets in one day, to commemorate 40 years since the composer’s death.

At the centre of their programme is the anguished but beautiful 4th quartet by Shostakovich, flanked by Haydn’s ‘Sunrise’ and Dvorák s delightful string quintet, composed immediately after the ‘American’ quartet and of a very similar joyful and song-filled character.

Saturday 21st October - 7pm - Chamber Music Concert - Tim Horton - Piano

Programme of music: Schumann: Humoreske Op.20, Rowland-Jones: Preludes, Schubert: Sonata in B flat D.960.

Tim Horton is back at Holkham after his memorable recital here in 2013. He is well known to Norfolk audiences from his many performances at the North Norfolk Music Festival, both as a solo recitalist and as one of the foremost chamber music pianists in this country. Tim is the pianist of Ensemble 360, formed in 2005 to take over the residency at the Crucible, Sheffield from the Lindsay Quartet. He also has a duo partnership with cellist Adrian Brendel with whom he has given tours of Spain, Germany, Italy and the UK, including appearances at Wigmore Hall.

Tim has collaborated with leading chamber musicians Paul Lewis, Peter Cropper, the Elias Quartet, the Vertavo String Quartet and members of the Kungsbacka Piano Trio. He also performs regularly as guest pianist with the Nash Ensemble. Tim gave his first solo recital at Wigmore Hall in July last year. His programme includes some new preludes by Simon Rowland-Jones especially composed for him and finishes with Schubert’s final masterpiece for solo piano, the deeply affecting Sonata in B flat D.960.

Friday 10th November - 7pm - Chamber Music Concert - Castalian String Quartet

Programme of music: Haydn: String Quartet in E flat Op.76 No.6, Schumann: String Quartet in A minor Op.41 No.1, Beethoven: String Quartet in A minor Op.132.

The Castalian Quartet is rapidly emerging as the exciting new voice on the international chamber music scene. Over the last three years they have won top prizes at major international competitions including first prize and three special awards at the 2015 Lyon International Competition, first prize and the audience prize at the Kammermusik Hannover Next Generation Competition in 2013 and third prize at the prestigious 2016 Banff International String Quartet Competition.

Engagements this year include recitals at Wigmore Hall, concerts in Germany, France and Italy as well as appearances at the North Norfolk Music Festival and at the Aldeburgh Festival. Their programme comprises three of the greatest string quartets in the repertoire, finishing with Beethoven’s late Op.132 and its luminous Song of Thanksgiving of a Convalescent to God.
