Description

17th April 2016 - Clare Mackintosh

The novelist, who worked as a police officer for 12 years before a career as a journalist, will talk about writing the book, which tells the story of a tragic accident from multiple viewpoints. The tale was inspired by a real life hit and run accident that Mackintosh was involved in investigating shortly after she joined the force. Her second novel, I See You, will be published in August.

“We are thrilled to welcome Clare Mackintosh to Briarfields,” says marketing manager Jac Sandy. “She follows a stellar cast of crime writers who have appeared at Bookfest, including Emma Healey, Kate Mosse, Sophie Hannah and Elly Griffiths.

“Our Bookfests are hugely popular, attracting up to 80 guests who have an opportunity to chat with authors and have their books signed after they talk.

Tickets are priced £15, which includes Briarfields’ Posh Afternoon Tea, so it’s a wonderful occasion for book lovers to enjoy a perfectly indulgent literary moment.”

28th April 2016 - Michelle Miller

Miller’s debut novel was initially published in twelve weekly installments on an angel investor-funded website, along with other experimental digital projects. Previously, she had written essays and young adult novels under pseudonyms while working as a finance and management consultant in New York and Europe.

Spotted by a literary agent, Miller was signed to Penguin Random House who helped her to evolve the episodes into a novel, which was released in May 2015. In the title, which has been described as The Social Network meets The Wolf of Wall Street, Todd Kent and his investment banking team race to close a $14bn deal for a new dating app.

At the Briarfields Bookfest, Miller will talk about her debut work and how technology is transforming the self-published to publisher route of today’s authors.

“We are so excited to have secured a rare UK appearance by Michelle Miller, whose first book is an explosive and adrenaline-fuelled read,” says Briarfields’ marketing manager Jac Sandy. “This mid-week, early evening event is the first time we have taken the highly successful Briarfields Bookfest events into a new direction, and I know Michelle Miller will be a sensational speaker. We look forward to welcoming Bookfest fans and perhaps those intrigued by the idea of publishing their own work too.”

At the Bookfest, Miller will talk about her work before taking questions from the audience. The Bookfest will conclude with a light supper of fish pie and a glass of house wine. Tickets are priced £15, including food and drink.

25th June 2016 - Freya North

“We are delighted to confirm Freya North as our third 2016 Bookfest series,” says Briarfields’ marketing manager Jac Sandy. “Each year we are delighted to welcome some of the biggest names in writing to our Bookfests, and have previously welcomed Kate Mosse, Sophie Hannah, Elly Griffiths, Emma Healey and Barbara Erskine.

Author Freya North, whose latest novel, The Turning Point is set on the North Norfolk coast, will share the inspiration behind the story, how she became a best-selling author and why she hates the term ‘chick lit’ when used to describe her work, at Briarfields’ summer Bookfest.

At the event, which takes place at 3pm on Saturday 25 June at the Titchwell hotel, North will give a talk before answering literary fans’ questions and signing copies of her books. The author – who says her work is, “perennially popular because it describes everyday folk” – gave up her PhD in Art History to pen her first novel, Sally, which was published in 1996.

The title, which charts the story of a woman embarking on an affair, was subject to a five-publisher bidding war that resulted in a six-figure deal for the author. Since then, she has been awarded Romantic Novel of the Year 2008, and has published 13 novels which have sold more than 2m copies in the UK.

In The Turning Point, Canadian musician Scott Emerson and North Norfolk-based British author Frankie Shaw meet and start a long-distance relationship, against the odds, across oceans and time zones.

“We are delighted to welcome Freya North to Briarfields,” says marketing manager Jac Sandy. “Our Bookfests continue to attract best-selling authors, and to have a writer who shares our love of the North Norfolk coast join us is very special indeed. We look forward to finding out more about her work and learning what it takes to write a contemporary romantic novel.”

Tickets for the Freya North Bookfest are available from Briarfields, priced £15 including Posh Afternoon Tea, on 01485 210742. The event is supported by Waterstones King’s Lynn.

16th October 2016 - Mark Billingham

Also confirmed for 2016 is author Mark Billingham who will speak on Sunday 16 October. His Tom Thorne series has been adapted for television, with David Morrissey starring as Thorne. His latest book is Time of Death, the thirteenth novel in the series.

“This year’s speakers will continue to make Briarfields’ Bookfests unmissable dates for book lovers, with the opportunity to hear authors’ talk about their careers, answer questions and sign a copy of their books over Briarfields’ Posh Af ternoon Tea. We encourage people to book their tickets fast as our Bookfests are always sell-out events.”
