Norfolk Holiday Guide visits their customer The Gables B&B

With our planned camping trip to Deepdale Backpackers, Camping and Glamping in Bertie, our VW T25, shelved due to The Other Half being poorly, The Small One and I set about plan B.

Hunstanton was chosen as our first destination, due to it being budget-friendly and having so much to keep The Small One busy. A scour of our B&B’s and Guesthouses in Hunstanton on www.NorfolkHolidayGuide.com showed favour on this occasion to The Gables Bed and Breakfast.

The Gables, run by the delightful Richard and Linda, is in a fantastic location – just a short walk in to Hunstanton town centre, the promenade and all it has to offer, including the Sea Life Centre (with its fabulous pirate play area), arcades, restaurants, take-aways, pubs and more.

A 15 minute walk in the other direction took us to Old Hunstanton and the lovely sandy beach (although thankfully still littered with plenty of interesting shells and pebbles to make beach combing interesting). There is a shop/cafe there and a pay and display car park.

However, we prefer the more “secret” beach cafe and shop a bit further on and, no, we aren’t telling you where it is as it’s one of our precious gems 🙂 But we can be bribed…

So, back to The Gables – Linda called to establish our time of arrival to ensure they were there to greet us. She also explained about parking – free on street parking available on their road, Austin Street, and neighbouring roads, subject to availability (we arrived at 3pm on a boiling hot beach weather day and found no problem parking within a minutes walk of the B&B).

When we arrived Richard kindly checked us in and explained where we were in relation to the town’s facilities. He also showed us a breakfast menu and took our order for breakfast and asked us what time we would like it served. A little unusual we thought, but then on reading the Welcome book in our room we established that Richard and Linda are keen to eliminate waste and want to ensure that guests have space and time to enjoy their breakfast, rather than all being in the two dining areas at one time. All made for a better experience (more of which later).

Our room (number 2 on the 1st floor), was small but perfectly adequate. One room housed a toilet and basin, a cupboard revealed a large storage area with hanging space, a mini fridge should we require it and spare blankets. The final door revealed a shower which provided plentiful hot water at a very decent rate (one of my biggest bug bears, with long thick hair to wash, is when you have a dribble for a shower! No such complaints here!).

It also had a delightful balcony with two chairs and a table that afforded a sea view!

There were toiletries for our use if required, along with tea/coffee making facilities and, for those that hate that UHT milk (does anyone actually like the stuff?!) there is always fresh milk available on request.

After a wonderful afternoon on Old Hunstanton beach, followed by the best fish and chips I have ever tasted – accompanied by a very welcome cold glass of Pinot Grigio, we had a great nights sleep and woke up to a lovely breakfast the next day. There must have been 8 or more cereals to choose from, alongside yoghurts and fresh fruit. Juice, milk and butter was already on the tables. Your choice of tea or coffee served directly to you. The breakfast was very tasty – we opted for the cooked variety (vegetarian options are also available) and it was cooked to perfection.

We both thoroughly enjoyed a warm, comfortable stay at The Gables and could not fault the service we received from Richard and Linda. We very much hope to visit again and would have no hesitation in recommending this lovely B&B to our NorfolkHolidayGuide.com website visitors.

We will tell more about the places we visited and the lovely food we ate in another post.

If you would like us to visit your business to provide a first hand review we would be delighted to hear from you.
