Voewood Festival 2011 – The Literary Garden Party of The Year

Simon Finch (Festival Chairman, rare book dealer and owner of Voewood) and Clare Conville (Festival Curator, Partner in Conville and Walsh Literary Agency) are proud to announce the inaugural Voewood Festival, which promises to be the literary garden party of the year.

For 3 days over August Bank Holiday, Voewood House will host a stellar line up of award winning authors, a stimulating and inspiring selection of literary events and exclusive music performances. Situated on the stunning North Norfolk coast, Voewood is widely acknowledged as one of our most beautiful Arts and Crafts country houses and was recently voted regional winner for the East in the Country Life and Savill’s England’s Favourite House Award 2011, with judge Emma Bridgewater stating “Voewood takes your breath away.”

Authors of Oscar winning film ‘The King’s Speech’ Mark Logue and Peter Conradi will open the festival and will join ex MI5 boss Sir John Scarlett and other literary heavyweights including DBC Pierre, Diana Athill, Sarah Hall, Dan Cruikshank, John Niven, Louis de Bernieres, Misha Glenny and SJ Watson with many more to be announced. Event hosts include Rowan Pelling, Damian Barr and Paul Blezzard.

Diana Athill OBE, winner of 2009 Costa Biography Prize for her memoir Somewhere Towards The End said: “It´s such a pleasure to be coming to a literary event in Norfolk where I always feel so much at home.´

A programme of evening music events features Adam Ant, Beth Orton, Cleveland Watkiss, David McAlmont and Glen Matlock amongst others.

Guardian Masterclass, one of Voewood’s Festival Partners, will be running a series of their renowned master classes during the three days, led by some of the major festival authors.

Earthworks icon Richard Long will be in conversation with Rachel Campbell-Johnson and artists Gavin Turk and Deborah Curtis will engage young and old alike in their magical Art Room.

Visitors lucky enough to climb into bed with exciting young novelist David Whitehouse will be read to – excerpts from his award winning book ‘Bed’.

London Zoo Artist in Residence, Bridget Nicholls will recreate her brainchild Pestival by taking the whole family on Pestival walks around the beautiful grounds. Voewood will also boast a unique pop up bookshop created by Norwich based Henry Layte of the Bookhive.

With amazing help from many people it has become a reality. The house and gardens lend magic to any event and with such a stellar line up it promises to be an unforgettable weekend. We will produce the festival every year on the same weekend and endeavour to make it a significant date in the literary calendar.”
