New Year´s Day Walk at Fairhaven

Enjoy a seasonal tour of our woodland garden. Learn about the history of Fairhaven, the collection of plants introduced by the 2nd Lord Fairhaven and the organic working methods still used today by the gardening team. An exhibition of paintings by members of the art class that meets weekly in St Lawrence´s, South Walsham, led by Nicky Arrowsmith-Brown. A great collection of varied subjects and painting styles.

Elizabeth is proud to present her second solo exhibition at Fairhaven Garden. As a keen gardener and country lover she will be displaying original paintings depicting landscapes and floral subjects, together with prints, cards and craft items.

The Voice Project Choir´s ´Red Shift´

Norfolk’s internationally renowned Voice Project Choir will combine lighting and music to make imaginative use of Norwich’s medieval Friary complex St Andrew’s Hall for their next concert on 23 January. Music for the concert will be specially written for the choir’s 150+ voices.

Fleamarket at King´s Lynn Corn Exchange

The Fleamarket attracts buyers and browsers of all ages, offering a wide and varied range of collectables including old favourites such as postcards, ephemera, coins, badges, books, records and classic toys. An Antique and Collectors Fair that is not to be missed!

Crossings - An Exhibition of Abstract Art by Christopher Sharpe at Fairhaven

Christopher Sharpe´s vibrant, dark paintings have a kind of uneasy calm suggesting a twilight or nocturnal atmosphere. Colours can be subdued or strangely intense. Christopher will be present during his exhibition.

Teddy Bear Express on the Bure Valley Railway

The Teddy Bear Express at the Bure Valley Railway returns for the children’s half term holiday. The Railway’s resident bear will take charge again at Aylsham Station to ensure nine days of fun for all the family! A children’s competition to see how many teddy bears can be spotted on the train journey, a colouring corner and a decorated Whilstlestop Café add to this teddy bear themed event. To make this truly a children’s event, the Railway is giving free travel to every child when accompanied by a fare-paying adult (maximum 2 children per adult). Don’t forget to bring your own teddy so that the Railway Bear is not lonely!

NGS Open Gardens - Horstead House

Horstead, Norwich NR12 7AU. Millions of beautiful snowdrops carpet the woodland setting with winter flowering shrubs. A stunning feature are the dogwoods growing on a small island in the River Bure, which flows through the garden. Small walled garden.

NGS Open Gardens - Bagthorpe Hall

Bagthorpe PE31 6QY. Snowdrops carpeting woodland walk, walled garden and main garden.

23rd February
NGS Open Gardens - Blickling Estate

Aylsham, Norwich, NR11 6NF. Four centuries of good husbandry have made this 55 acre garden one of the greatest in England. Norah Lindsay, the society gardener, created the garden you see today, which includes a C18 Orangery, Temple, secret garden, beautiful double borders and parterre, lake and ancient yew hedges. The new rose garden is taking shape. Sorry, no dogs.

Our Spring Steam Gala will feature an intensive timetable with a few unusual formations in service, it will also be an opportunity to see guest engines working alongside our own home fleet.

Clean For The Queen at Holkham

Clean for The Queen is a nationwide campaign launched by Country Life magazine in partnership with Keep Britain Tidy, with the concept mirroring the first national anti-litter campaign carried out in 1953, the year of The Queen’s coronation. The aim is to inspire a million people to take action and enjoy a few hours together litter-picking to make the places where we live more beautiful.

Mothers VIP Day on the Bure Valley Railway

Starting from Wroxham, experience the magic of steam through nine miles of Norfolk countryside, following the picturesque Bure Valley, before arriving at Aylsham. On arrival receive a complimentary drink and sit down to a two-course set lunch, including coffee and mints, at the Whistlestop. In addition, each mother receives a gift. Once lunch is finished, the train awaits for a leisurely journey back to Wroxham. (Advanced booking required). Alternatively, come and enjoy a steam train ride starting from either Aylsham or Wroxham and treat your Mother to a cream tea at the Whistlestop.

Easter Eggspress on the Bure Valley Railway

Hop on board the Easter Eggspress at the Bure Valley Railway over the Easter weekend, 25th to 28th March, for an “eggciting” day out for all the family. Norfolk’s longest Narrow Gauge Steam Railway is giving a free Easter Egg to every child when accompanied by a fare-paying adult (maximum 2 children per adult). In addition, a colouring corner and a decorated Whistlestop Café add to the Easter themed event.

Easter Fun at Holkham

There will be plenty to keep children entertained this Easter. Meet our Easter Bunny in the hall, join in Easter crafts or meet the Kiddy Cook team to decorate some tasty Easter treats. With a visit to the walled garden aboard our ‘Easter Express’ you will find our storyteller with plenty of tales to tell.

The Deepdale Spring Market is the next edition to the Dalegate Market annual programme, a lower key event than the Christmas Market, certainly for this first year. Naturally the focus of the Deepdale Spring Market is different too, and we are hosting only Norfolk artisans and producers.

The Spring Diesel Gala - Mid-Norfolk Railway

The Mid-Norfolk Railway is pleased to announce it’s Spring Diesel Gala from Friday, April 1st to Sunday April 3rd. This year’s annual Spring Diesel Gala promises to be another great MNR gala, with an intensive train service, visiting locomotives, real ale on all trains and our acclaimed restaurant car in use all weekend.

NGS Open Gardens - Hindringham Hall

Hindringham, NR21 0QA. Tudor Manor House surrounded with complete 13th century moat. Victorian nut walk, formal beds and wild garden. Surrounding the moat are thousands of narcissi (32 varieties), a working walled vegetable garden and stream garden ablaze with hellebore and primula in the spring. The garden has something of interest throughout the year continuing well into autumn.

5th April

Tractor Trailer Tours – Holkham Park

Hop on board our trailer for a guided tour to see some of our arable farmland within Holkham park. The tour is an excellent opportunity to explore behind the scenes. Travel back in time to the Great Barn and fast forward to the present day as you see the crops we grow and our conservation work on the farm.

8th April
The Sheringham Shantymen Concert at The Museum of The Broads
Shanties and songs all served up with a dollop of Norfolk humour! Bar available. All proceeds to the Museum of the Broads.

Wild Bird Photography at Fairhaven

This workshop will start with a short talk about suitable photographic equipment and how to set up a feeding station to attract birds close to your lens. It is hoped that students will be familiar with the basic settings and operation of their digital SLR but help will be given on this where necessary along with advice on the best settings to use for this type of subject. The main part of the course will be spent in Fairhaven’s bird hide to put the theory into practice.

The novelist will talk about writing the book, which tells the story of a tragic accident from multiple viewpoints. The tale was inspired by a real life hit and run accident that Mackintosh was involved in investigating shortly after she joined the police force.

Chamber Music in the Marble Hall at Holkham – Louis Schwizgebel

Louis has played as a soloist with orchestras from around the world including the CBSO, the LPO, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Shanghai Philharmonic. During the 2015/6 season he will play with the LPO, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and with orchestras in the USA, Canada and Australia, as well as giving recitals and concerts in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

The Red House garden was created over last 30 years by the present owners. Thickly planted with many unusual and doubtfully hardy plants and traditional herbaceous borde. The Old Chapel garden has been created from an earlier garden in the past 2 years with beds filled with interesting herbaceous plants, roses and bulbs, shaded by a Salix Tortuosa. The garden was planted in the autumn of 2010 once extensive dredging of the large pond had taken place. It contains several mature trees, island beds planted with shrubs and herbaceous perennials, a rose border at the entrance to the large vegetable garden, small wild walk around the pond and a shade garden.

Waverley Road, Norwich, Norfolk, NR4 6SG. Three gardens along the same road, all different. Number 15 Waverley Road is a long town garden that´s pretending it is in the country including a miniature wild meadow and fruit trees. Number 17 Waverley Road has relaxed herbaceous planting around established shrubs and mature trees creating a woodland feel and Bamboos and Japanese Acers compliment rambling roses. 19 Branksome Road has varying shaped lawns and terraces that radiate from the house, to make the most of a corner plot. Interesting mixed planting, plus vegetables, fruit cage and greenhouse.

NGS Open Gardens - Holme Hale Hall

Holme Hale, Thetford, Norfolk, IP25 7ED. Noted for its spring display of tulips and alliums, historic wisteria plus mid and late summer flowering. Walled kitchen garden and front garden designed and planted in 2000 by Chelsea winner Arne Maynard. The garden incorporates herbaceous borders, trained fruit, vegetables and traditional greenhouse. The garden is going to be rejuvenated by Arne Maynard in 2016.

These provide a series of connecting gardens which, through a south facing garden wall, lead to further gardens of clipped box, pleached hornbeam, fruit trees and roses. All set within recently planted woodland providing avenues and vistas.

Wells-Next-The-Sea, Norfolk, NR23 1DP. Of the five gardens in the group four are smaller town gardens and one is somewhat larger: all demonstrate a variety of design and planting approaches incorporating herbaceous borders, "cottage", shrub and fruit, with two of the gardens providing different "rooms". The route around the five gardens takes in the Parish Church of St Nicholas, the High Street with its beautiful once-shop windows and the tree lined Georgian green square, The Buttlands.
