Walled Gardens Ramble at Holkham Hall

Join one of our gardeners for a guided walk to explore the ´seen and unseen areas´ of the 6 1/2 acre Walled Gardens.

Wymondham Music Festival

The 2013 Festival was, in many people’s opinions, a particularly good one. We had record attendances, some superb music and a general feeling that we are now running with the best. We’re now putting the finishing touches to the planning for 2014. We’ve got some splendid musicians and events lined up, and are currently working hard on the detailed event planning and putting our printed programme to bed.

4th July
Diva Opera in the Marble Hall at Holkham – Don Giovanni

Often hailed as the most popular opera ever written, Mozart’s Don Giovanni was inspired by the legend of Don Juan and is undoubtedly his most dramatic work. Starring Changhan Lim as Don Giovanni with Alan Fairs, Ana James, Robert-Anthony Gardiner and Matthew Hargreaves, this new Diva Opera production for 2014 should not be missed.

4th to 5th July
Festival Too - Free Entertainment in King´s Lynn

FREE street entertainment on Saturday 5th in the town centre and live music in the evenings of both Friday and Saturday on the Tuesday Market Place.

Diva Opera in the Marble Hall at Holkham – The Tales of Hoffmann

Jacques Offenbach’s final opera The Tales of Hoffmann takes us into a fantastical and surreal world with music of dazzling virtuosity. The cast includes Michael Bracegirdle as Hoffmann, Louise Mott as his companion Nicklausse, Matthew Hoffmann as the Villains and Stephanie Corley as Antonia.

Outdoor Theatre - The Pantaloons´ History of Britain - at Fairhaven

Mud, blood and stiff upper-lips! It´s the history of Britain as you´ve never seen it before. Join the critically-acclaimed Pantaloons Theatre Company for a breathless race through the centuries. This historically hysterical show is packed with songs, sketches and silliness and is suitable for all ages.

Farmers Market at Creake Abbey

Over 55 of the region’s best food and drink producers will be at Creake Abbey to supply outstanding fresh seasonal produce including meat, vegetables and fruit, cakes, tray bakes, dairy produce, artisan beer, apple juice, artisan breads, morning goods, puddings, pies, tarts (sweet and savoury), olives and prepared meals all made with the finest local ingredients.

5th July
NGS Open Gardens - Walcott House

Walcott Green, Walcott, Norwich, Norfolk, NR12 0NU. A garden in the making with emphasis on formal structure around the house and a traditional set of Norfolk farm buildings. These provide a series of connecting gardens which, through a south facing garden wall, lead to further gardens of clipped box, pleached hornbeam, fruit trees and roses. All set within recently planted woodland providing avenues and vistas.

5th to 6th July
Martham Carnival 2014

There will be a parade where donations will be collected for future Martham Carnivals. Instead of lorries there is a walking parade, which can also include bikes, trikes, rickshaws, skates, scooters, buggies, dancers, wheelchairs, mobility scooters…..etc etc! People make giant puppets and costumes, models and decorations for their bikes etc. The theme this year is Super Heroes!

5th to 6th July
Vintage Transport Festival - North Norfolk Railway Poppy Line

The railway´s annual Vintage Transport Festival and Bus Weekend has become one of the "must attend" events for owners of classic cars, trucks and motorcycles. There is so much to see and do with everything from marine engines and bicycles to Rolls Royces and tractors on show.

5th to 6th July
NGS Open Gardens - The Bear Shop

Elm Hill, Norwich, Norfolk, NR3 1HN. Considered to be based on a design by Gertrude Jekyll, a small terraced garden behind a C15 house in the historic Cathedral Quarter of Norwich. Enjoy the tranquillity of the riverside.

5th to 13th July
Quad-Art Week - North Norfolk Railway Poppy Line

The Quad-Art set will be in service on each of the above dates in normal passenger service. 5/6 July is also our Vintage Transport Day, where a large number of vintage cars and motorcycles will be on display at the various stations along the line.

Taverham Brass Band at Fairhaven

A varied mix of the traditional and modern, classical and pop, show music and old favourites.

NGS Open Gardens - Desert World Gardens

NGS Open Gardens - 68 Elm Grove Lane

Norwich, Norfolk, NR3 3LF. This extended living/working space is the owner’s endeavour to redefine a suburban garden and to provide inspiration when viewed from his studio window. Aesthetic values, initially took precedent over gardening know-how, but over 30yrs a more balanced approach has resulted in an eclectic array of informal planting, rich in colour and form and full of surprises.

NGS Open Gardens - Blickling Lodge

Blickling, Norwich, Norfolk, NR11 6PS. Georgian house (not open) set in 17 acres of parkland including cricket pitch, mixed border, walled kitchen garden, yew garden, river and woodland walk.

NGS Open Gardens - Houghton Hall Walled Garden

New Houghton, King´s Lynn, Norfolk, PE31 6UE. Superbly laid-out award-winning 5-acre walled garden divided by clipped yew hedges into ´garden rooms´, incl large mixed kitchen garden. Magnificently colourful 120m double herbaceous border. Rose parterre with over 120 varieties. Fountains, incl ´Waterflame´ by Jeppe Hein, glasshouse, statues, rustic temple and croquet lawn.

NGS Open Gardens - The Mowle

Staithe Road, Ludham, Norfolk, NR29 5NP. Approx 2½ acres running down to marshes. The garden incl several varieties of catalpa. Japanese garden and enlarged wildlife pond with bog garden. A special border for gunnera as in Aug 2008 we were given full National Collection status. Boardwalk into wild area.

11th to 12th July
Festival Too - Free Entertainment in King´s Lynn

NGS Open Gardens - Manor Farm, Coston

Coston Lane, Coston, nr Barnham Broom, Norfolk, NR9 4DT. Approx 3 acre country garden, several small garden rooms with both formal and informal planting. Any Swing Goes at Fairhaven

Swing music from the 1940s & 50s featuring songs by Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Michael Buble and classic sounds from the Glen Miller era.

NGS Open Gardens - Bradenham Hall

Bradenham, Thetford, Norfolk, IP25 7QP. A garden for all seasons. Flower gardens, formally designed and richly planted, rose gardens, paved garden, unusual climbers, herbaceous and shrub borders, traditional kitchen gardens with 2 glasshouses. Arboretum of over 800 different trees, all labelled. Massed daffodils in spring. A delight and an education.

13th to 26th July
King´s Lynn Festival 2014

World-famous names will be heading to King’s Lynn this summer to take part in the town’s 64th feast of music and the arts. Artistic director Ambrose Miller said: “The programme has very broad appeal and includes a wide range of music performed by international musicians maintaining the Festival’s tradition of excellence.”

15th July
Guided Walk on Holkham Nature Reserve

One of a series of short, gentle walks around the Holkham National Nature Reserve taking in the diverse habitats and seasonal highlights of the wildlife. From nesting lapwing in the spring to pink footed geese and fungi in the autumn, whatever the time of year there’s always lots to see.

Ghost Walk at Fairhaven

Enjoy a spine-tingling ramble through the wood listening to the myths and legends of the Fairhaven Woodland Garden.

18th to 20th July
13th North Norfolk Railway Beer Festival

The mix of steam and real ale makes for a truly memorable festival. Over 100 real ales, ciders and perries. Souvenir glasses and polo shirts.

19th July
NGS Open Gardens - Blickling Estate

Aylsham, Norwich, Norfolk, NR11 6NF. Four centuries of good husbandry have made this 55 acre garden one of the greatest in England. Norah Lindsay, the society gardener, created the garden you see today, which incl an C18 Orangery, Temple, secret garden, beautiful double borders and parterre, lake and ancient yew hedges. New rose garden is taking shape. Gravel paths, electric vehicles to borrow. Sorry, no dogs.

19th to 20th July
Norwich Charity Motor Show & Family Fun Event at the Norfolk Showground

7th Annual Charity Motor Show & Family Fun Event in aid of East Anglian Air Ambulance, EACH (East Anglian Childrens Hospice, Quidenham) and Lions Charity Funds. New and classic vehicles of all descriptions, Children’s rides, amusements & competitions. The Daleks and Star Wars are back by public demand.

Holt Festival 2014

Holt Festival is an award winning annual feast of the arts taking place in the charming North Norfolk Georgian country town in the last week of July. In just 5 years it has earned an increasingly high profile nationally and internationally based on the world class strength of its programming.

Sutton Jazz Quartet at Fairhaven

Jazz standards with a smooth swing feel featuring music from Glen Miller,
Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and George Shearing.

NGS Open Gardens - West Barsham Hall

Fakenham, Norfolk, NR21 9NP. Large garden with lake, approx 10 acres. Mature yew hedging and sunken garden originally laid out by Gertrude Jeykll. Swimming pool garden, shrub borders, kitchen garden with herbaceous borders, fruit cage and cutting garden. New bog garden. Separate old fashioned cottage garden also open.

NGS Open Gardens - West Lodge

Aylsham, Norfolk, NR11 6HB. 9-acre garden with lawns, splendid mature trees, rose garden, well-stocked herbaceous borders, ornamental pond, magnificent 2.5 acre C19 walled kitchen garden (maintained as such). Georgian house (not open) and outbuildings incl a well-stocked tool shed (open) and greenhouses.

King´s Lynn Kruisers Annual Vehicle Extravaganza

Walpole St Andrew community centre, Nr Kings Lynn, PE14 7JW. This is a car show of Hot Rods, Customs, Classics, Americans or anything that can be driven.

26th July
Summer Jazz Train - Mid Norfolk Railway

Join us on board our very special swinging Jazz train for an evening of live jazz from the Classic Dixieland Trio. The band will play at Dereham Station from 19:15, before the train departs at 19:30. Live music will play during the journey, as well as some of our smaller station platforms along the line, where you can get out and have a little dance.

26th to 27th July
Gorleston Clifftop Festival 2014

Over the two days the event features a wide range of activity’s available for the all the family in the sun. There are many different stalls which allow you to browse for any items you may wish to buy. One of the main features of the event is the music set which includes musicians, bands & dance acts from all around the area.

Worstead Festival 2014

The festival is aimed at being a real community event, and that means making sure there’s lots for all the family to do. The children’s craft tent will include lots of cheap activities for younger festival-goers, like wand making and the like. There’ll also be some story-telling and plenty of room to have a run about.

Rutland Wind Ensemble playing.

NGS Open Gardens - Salle Park

Salle, Reepham, Norfolk, NR10 4SF. Fully productive Victorian kitchen garden with original vine houses, double herbaceous borders, ice house, and Norfolk Heritage Fruit orchard. Formal Georgian pleasure gardens with yew topiary, rose gardens and lawns.

AUGUST 2014

1st to 2nd August
North Walsham Beer Festival 2014

Featuring Beers, Ciders and Wines all produced locally in Norfolk itself. CAMRA rated, with music, food and custom Beer Glasses. With such a vast array of milds, bitters and ciders available there is sure to be something to suit all tastes.

1st to 3rd August
VW Whitenoise Music Festival - Euston Park

A stunning NEW venue hosting divine music and motors, theatrics and art installations awaits. All a mere 30 miles from Norwich, Ipswich and Cambridge and just 85 miles from the Big Smoke.

1st to 10th August
Wells-next-the-Sea Annual Carnival

We endeavour to provide entertainment for all ages from teddy bears picnics for the little ones, costume making workshops, raft race, history walks plus live music over 6 nights and the ever popular Screen on the Green. The event culminates on the 2nd Saturday with the main Carnival event, including fancy dress competitions, a parade around the town and a spectacular music event in the evening.

2nd August

1940s Weekend - Railway at War - Mid-Norfolk Railway

Join us for a trip down memory lane, we roll the clock back to the 1940s Wartime era, with a display of vintage war time vehicles and music from the period. Steam services operate during the day.

A varied musical mix of sea shanties, folk, Irish, Country and Western and old time singalongs.

NGS Open Gardens - Holme Hale Hall

Holme Hale, Thetford, Norfolk, IP25 7ED. Noted for its spring display of tulips and aliums, historic wisteria plus mid and late summer flowering. Walled kitchen garden and front garden designed and planted in 2000 by Chelsea winner Arne Maynard. The garden incorporates herbaceous borders, trained fruit, vegetables and traditional greenhouse. We are creating a terrace and nuttery and restoring the Victorian Ice House.

3rd August
NGS Open Gardens - Church Farm

Wymondham Road, Wramplingham, Wymondham, Norfolk, NR18 0RU. An half acre garden of two eras. One a vista of calm formality packed with colourful herbaceous borders, some edged with lavender punctuated with a perfumed rose pergola. The other a beautiful cottage garden full of hot and pastel shades with a koi pond. The gardens have an overall relaxing feel.

3rd August
NGS Open Gardens - Dunbheagan

Dereham Road, Westfield, Norfolk, NR19 1QF. 1.4 acre plantsman´s garden. Relax and enjoy walking among the borders and beds full of colour well into late Summer with plants of all descriptions. Extensive collection of rare and unusual plants plus the more recognisable. We try to provide the ‘wow’ factor. Reepham Ensemble playing 2-4pm.

4th August
The First World War Remembered at Holkham Hall

Holkham Hall´s exhibition for 2014 will commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the start of WW1. The exhibition will tell a small part of the story of the war´s impact on the Coke family and Holkham village.

4th August
World War One Centenary Concert at Holkham Hall

As well as music the programme will include readings by Joshua Ellicott of a selection of his Great Uncle Jack´s letters written from the front back home to his parents in Lancashire. Joshua was given the entire collection of letters by his grandfather, Harry Ellicott and this moving programme has been added to the Chamber Music at Holkham series to commemorate the Centenary of World War One.

Chapterhouse Theatre Company are delighted to return to Holkham with this captivating production and beautiful adaptation by award winning writer Laura Turner, with all your favourite animal characters brought to life to create an enchanting and fun-filled musical show for children of all ages.

Creake Abbey - Childrens Art Workshop

Local artist Jacky Hutson will be running art workshops for children aged 7+ this summer. The sessions will be located at Creake Abbey from 11am to 1pm.

Pinewoods Discovery Day - Holkham Park

Join Holkham’s education team for some hands on, fun family activities exploring the wildlife you can find on the National Nature Reserve pinewoods. Sessions last from 10am-12.30pm and 1pm-3.30pm. Meet us in the pinewoods at Wells beach following signs from the Beach Road car park.

Sandringham Craft, Sculpture and Art Fair

The scope and aims of the show have been expanded to include more working demonstrations in the new working craft village. Meet them in person as they showcase their individual crafts, and you can find unusual gifts or special pieces for your home, not usually found on the High Street.

Starting Handle Club Summer Show

The value for money show for all the family, celebrating 40 years of the Starting Handle Club. Rare Vintage Tractors, Stationary Engines, Horticultural Equipment & Agricultural Implements.

Hemsby Lifeboat Day 2014

Come and enjoy a fun family day out supporting this very worthwhile cause. The day includes music on the beach, bar on the beach, grand raffle, children’s entertainment, lifeboat displays, charity stalls and tombola stalls. There´s lots to do and see at the 2014 Hemsby Lifeboat Day, so mark it in your calender and help to continue the valuable work of the volunteer lifesaving team.

10th August
Norfolk Jazz Quartet at Fairhaven

Swinging jazz standards and melodic music from the Great American Song Book played on a combination of clarinet/saxophones, guitar, bass and drums will take you back to the halcyon days of the jazz and swing era. Four musicians who play what they love and love what they play. Don´t miss them.

NGS Open Gardens - Lake House

Postwick Lane, Brundall, Norfolk, NR13 5LU. In the centre of Brundall Gardens, a series of ponds descends through a wooded valley to the shore of a lake. Steep paths wind through a variety of shrubs and flowers in season, which attract many kinds of rare birds, dragonflies and mammals

NGS Open Gardens - Plovers Hill

Buckenham Road, Strumpshaw, Norfolk, NR13 4NL. 1-acre garden of contrasts, small C18 house (not open) with RIBA award winning orangery. Formal lawn hedged with yew and lesser species, huge mulberry, gingko, liquidambar and Japanese bitter orange, herbaceous borders with a range of varied plants and spring bulbs. Kitchen garden with orchard and soft fruits. Garden sculptures. Water feature. Cast aluminium silver birches.

10th August
NGS Open Gardens - Severals Grange

Holt Road, Wood Norton, Norfolk, NR20 5BL. The gardens surrounding Severals Grange and the adjoining nursery Hoecroft Plants are a perfect example of how colour, shape and form can be created by the use of foliage plants, from large shrubs to small alpines. Movement and lightness is achieved by interspersing these plants with a wide range of ornamental grasses, which are at their best in late summer. Extensive range of ornamental grasses and shrubs in various garden settings.

12th to 24th August
10th North Norfolk Music Festival

A variety of classical pieces performed on a selection of instruments including violin, viola, cello, piano and guitar, as well as solo and choral vocals. Many stunning performances by world renowned musicians and singers.

13th August
RNLI Sandcastle Competion at Old Hunstanton

The RNLI will be holding a sandcastle competion on the beach in front of the RNLI Boathouse. Registration from 1pm, entry £1, prizes for 3 age groups.

Creake Abbey - Childrens Art Workshop

After a year off, Voewood Festival returns in 2014 with a wonderfully eclectic blend of literature, art, music and excellent food and drink. A true boutique festival held at the magnificent Arts and Crafts Voewood House.

Old Hunstanton Flower Festival

Throughout each day there will be a wonderful display of flowers with “My Favourite Book” theme, stalls , tombola and food available (admission free). Each evening there will be musical events.

16th to 22nd August
Cromer Carnival

Details of this year´s carnival have yet to be published but will include a carnival parade, fun, games, competitions, aerobatic displays and much more.

17th August
Great Yarmouth Brass at Fairhaven

From the rip-roaring to the foot-tapping show selections, film music, war time singalongs and marches.

NGS Open Gardens - Daisy Cottage

Chapel Road, Roughton, Norwich, Norfolk, NR11 8AF. 2 acre garden not to be missed, with areas dedicated for wildlife, incl stream, pond, and more formally a Japanese style garden. Among its features are mixed borders, vegetable garden and apiary, chickens and ducks. The garden has an individual charm whatever the season. Produce and plants for sale. Bees and bugs in the garden demo.

17th August
NGS Open Gardens - Oxburgh Hall

Oxborough, Norfolk, PE33 9PS. Hall and moat surrounded by lawns, fine trees and herbaceous border; charming parterre garden of French design dating back to 1845. Orchard and vegetable garden. Woodland walks. A garden steward is on duty on open days to lead 4 free tours throughout the day.

A fascinating exhibition of photographs taken by Lilah Wingfield recording her childhood at Holkham Hall and her visit to India for the Royal Durbar in 1911. The Britain of 1911 was a country unknowingly on the brink of a war that was to change society for ever.

Father Christmas at Fairhaven

Treat the family this year to a magical woodland Christmas experience in our woodland garden. Follow the trail through the trees to meet reindeer Comet and Blitzen then on to visit Father Christmas tucked away in a traditional yurt. Have a wander through the garden before returning to the tearoom for hot chestnuts, hot chocolate and some seasonal fare.
As dusk descends don’t miss the trail lights coming on and help Father Christmas collect his post box and walk his reindeer back along the trail.
