Christmas Tide 2011 - Wells-next-the-Sea

Well who would have thought it, Christmas is less than 100 days away and cards and 2012 diaries are already appearing in shops! The Carnival Committee have also been working away on the Plans for Christmas Tide 2011 and aim for it to be as magical as ever.

This Year’s Christmas Tide will take place on the 25th, 26th and 27th November

Earlier this month the Committee once again contacted Father Christmas and asked him if, during his busy schedule, he could find time to visit us at Wells-next-the-Sea. Once again we are thrilled to announce that he has said YES!!!As he travels from the ‘North Pole’ by boat to the Wells Christmas Tide event the day very much revolves around the tides with his estimated time of arrival in the harbour being late afternoon/early evening – (best to check our website for timings just in case it’s a choppy crossing and he is delayed - see below).

This year the festivities will kick off with a Christmassy Cocktail Evening on Friday 25th November at The Maltings in Staithe Street.

On the Saturday (26th November) from 12 noon there will be a Christmas market with delicious food available from the cafe in the Maltings. There is space available both inside and out for a stall, please get in touch if you require a space. This year the market will run from 12 noon to 7pm. During the afternoon a Living Nativity will set off from the Congregational Church and visit various ‘Inns’ on its journey to the ‘stable’.

A fancy dress competition precedes a stunning illuminated procession that travels from the Wells Health Centre down the main street of Wells to the Quay where crowds and a magnificent firework display welcomes Father Christmas to the harbour after his long journey, by sea. Children then have the opportunity to visit the ‘workshop’ where they can have a warming cup of hot chocolate and make Christmassy items before calling on Father and Mother Christmas ‘at home’. Shops and their ‘keepers’ also have the chance to show off their creative side with awards being given to the best dressed shop window and shop staff. The majority of the events are free of charge but we do ask for a minimum donation of £3 per child to cover the ‘workshop’ expenses.

Full details of the weekend’s events along with a map of events will be on the Christmas Tide website: Contact us by email: or visit us on Facebook

The Christmas Tide committee are always after volunteers to assist with the event - if you could spare an hour or so to assist we would be very grateful. We are particularly after marshals to escort the parade and assist with the road closure. If you don’t have enough time to spare over the weekend perhaps you would be interested in sponsoring an event? Please contact the committee on 07920065363 if you are interested in assisting in any way.

Keep an eye out in November’s edition of the Quay for further details of events and times.
